Installation Recommendations:

GPS Direct Online recommends that you contact a professional installation provider like a car alarm installer. Damage caused by incorrect installation will result in the customer having to purchase a new vehicle unit. If customers need assistance with the installation of their GPS vehicle tracking system, GPS Direct Online provides detailed installation instructions for each manufacturer (see links below) and we can help direct you to installers near your location.

Also, we encourage you to use the Installation Tracking Form to keep track of what GPS units you have installed into what vehicles.

Installation Recommendations:

  • ALWAYS follow the manufacturer's instructions.
  • Inventory all parts on receipt. Check for damage or missing components.
  • Install vehicle unit away from feet. The best location is under the dash near the steering column.
  • Always use a 5-amp in-line fuse to protect the unit from damage and prevent damage not covered by warranty.
  • Make sure vehicle unit gets constant 12v power even when the ignition is off by testing with a multi-meter. Watch the power when the vehicle is started and shut down. Some power leads can lose all power during starting, which will cause problems with the GPS systems. It should not dip below 9 volts.
  • Never tap into wires that may impact the safety of the vehicle such as an airbag wire.
  • Make sure you have a good ground secured with a screw.
  • Make sure wires are not pinched or repeatedly closed on doors.
  • The optimum location for the radio and GPS antenna is inside the windshield near the top for glass mount antennas.
  • Do not place the antenna in the arc of the wipers or behind tinting that may have metal in it.
  • Do not block or cover the GPS antenna with metal.
  • If in doubt, contact a professional installer.
